It should be noted that the difference between some types of therapy (ie) Cognitive Behavioral Therapy -  and personal coaching aren’t always clear-cut. Many therapists are “coach-like “ in their orientations and the two do share some common ground. It is always up to the Client to determine the best route for them.

Coaches are ethically bound to refer to mental health practitioners if/when the following conditions arise with their clients:

  1. The client has an active mental illness (depression, acute anxiety, etc.)
  2. The client has a substance abuse problem
  3. The client is in a situation characterized by emotional or physical abuse or threats of abuse* 4) The client has mentioned thoughts of suicide or attempted suicide*
  4. The coach feels as if (s)he is coaching outside his/her limit of competency
  5. The client shows no forward progression
